Conclusions

In speaking of "sacred geography" or of some preestablished ideological scheme having influenced the land and ancient human settlements, it seems necessary for us to site that which J. Broda has said to this respect:

The orientations of buildings and sites express the coordination of time and space according to the concepts of cosmovision

This suggests to us the fact that some Mesoamerican cultures appeal to the observation of the heavens searching for bodies and configurations that might be of use for the establishment and orientation of buildings or complete settlements.Once the cosmic order was abstractly understood by Mesoamericans, the recreation and use of stellar movements in earthly geography, brought with it the establishment of spatial alignments and earthly constructions that harmonized with the movement of the cosmos, from which derived, as we understand it, a sacred geometry, i.e. spatial alignments on earth imitating the movement and order of the stars or celestial bodies as understood in the indigenous cosmology.

The Hill Teoton as an axis mundi

As we have attempted to demonstrate, our study postulates that the location of the Hill Teoton constituted a focal point or foundation site in the context of the indigenous cosmovision in the Puebla-Tlaxcala valley. The significance and function of this place is no doubt owed to its place in a potential zone for the coordination of space and time. The landscape where it is found is sacred, given how synchronous it is to both space and time, the earthly geography with the celestial geography, being notable to the extent that it could determine the religious and historical significance of a city such as Cholula.

Time

Given that the moment:

a) Is a marker for the zenith passage of the sunrise (69.67) that rises over La Malinche,

b) Is the moment when the mid-day sun casts no shadow.

c) Is also situated over a stellar axis of 97.90 degrees crossing the Puebla valley.

d) Is possible that the aforementioned alignment points towards Alnilamīs rising, the central star in Orionīs belt.

e) That the alignment correlates with earlier settlements, such as preclassic Cholula and its pyramid.

f) Further, that its helical rising occurred at the same time that the summer solstice and its culmination closely followed in the winter solstice.

Space

a) As a cosmic confluence, the Hill Teoton represents the navel of this settled area.

b) Its location shares an equidistant line from Teoton to Cholula or

c) from Teoton to Popocatepetl

d) It shares an equidistant line from Teoton to Cerro Montero or

e) from Teoton to Apatlaco

Note that the Hill Teoton seems to form a radial center where time and space converge and overlap. As a cosmic intersection, it constitutes a symbol of space that defines time, and the function of time sanctifies space. That is to say, if an observer from above is not at the peak of Teoton at the right moment, he will miss this very singular event, given that the sunrise over La Malinche occurs only at a determined moment and place. Therefore Teoton is not only the confluence of space and time, but it is also the place where the succession of day and night converge into a single universe.

On the other hand, we propose that the symmetric design of the constellation Orion inspired and set the pattern for the configuration of the settlements of the defined area like a parallelogram, where the center is Teoton.According to our hypothesis, two phenomena - Orion by night - and the sun by day, were the decisive factors for the establishment of this particular region. Simple naked-eye observation as well as measurements made in transit indicate that, during the day, when as the sun rises over La Malinche, provided a strategic focal point to organize the first diagonal of the cosmic parallelogram. During the night, it was the stellar alignment of the - of the star Alnilam - the one that brought another diagonal over the landscape, thus forming the axis mundi, having Teoton for a focal point, being the center of the convergence of both triangles ("X") in the Orion constellation.

Finally, letīs consider the possibility that further studies show that a cosmic parallelogram of two diagonals formed by the zenith passage of the solar rising and the Alnilamīs stellar passage as an image of the Orion constellation, constitutes a frequent cosmic configuration in central Mexico, and that the axis mundi or navel this sacred configuration is located in certain archaeological sites
